Serbian tennis player and former world number one Novak Djokovic crushed Rafael Nadal to win the 2013 ATP World Tour Finals.

On Monday, November 11, Djokovic lifted the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals trophy for the third time. The second seed Djokovic won the title in 2008 and 2012. Even though Djokovic defeated Nadal in two straight sets (6-3, 6-4), Nadal will get to keep the crown for the No. 1 player for 2013 followed by Djokovic who will be at the No. 2 position for the season-ending championship.

The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals is one of the most prestigious tournaments of the season with only the top 8 ranked players competing. The Serbian won the game in one hour and 37 minutes at the O2 Arena in London and extended his winning streak over Nadal to 22 matches. Moreover, Djokovic has won in seven out of the nine matches the duo have played in 2013.

Besides retaining the title, the 26-year old Djokovic earned himself $1,923,000 in prize money along with 1,500 Emirates ATP Rankings points. On the other hand, the 27-year old Nadal received $1,013,000 as prize money and 1,000 points of Emirates ATP Rankings point.

Djokovic became the seventh player in the history of the tournament to win the tournament at least three times. Roger Federer has won six titles, Ivan Lendl and Pete Sampras have won five titles each, Ilie Nastase four title and Boris Becker and John McEnroe three each.

“We push each other to the limit [and] we make each other better,”

Djokovic. “We make each other work harder on our games, especially when we play against each other. It’s always a huge challenge. This can serve as a great platform for 2014 season. I’m extra motivated and inspired to work and get myself, first of all, rested and recovered in the off season, and then work on my game and get ready for Australian Open.”

Both Djokovic and Nadal had remained undefeated in the tournament.

The season for Nadal has finished and the Spanish player will get a break before starting the 2014 season. However, with the Davis Cup 2013 finals between Serbia and Czech Republic starting November 15, Djokovic still has some more work cut out for him this year.
